Bible Person: Mary of Bethany
Bible References: Luke 10:38-42; John 11: 1-46; Matthew 26:6-13
This lesson studies the life of Mary of Bethany. In this study, we will find that Mary was an example of what it means to be a disciple of Christ. We will see her listening to Jesus, see her life touched by Jesus, and see her life changed based on that touch. We will see Mary increasing in her knowledge, praise, and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is important to see the life priorities of Mary and how those priorities line up in our lives. We will be anticipating that same "touch" as we participate in the 40 Days of Purpose. We will be in awe of how God uses that "touch" to change people’s lives.
Read Luke 10:38-42
What did Jesus mean by "Mary has chosen what is better . . ." and by ". . . and it will not be taken away from her."?
Obviously, both Martha and Mary loved Jesus. Do you think there is a difference in that "love" as found in Luke 10:38-42. How would you describe the differences?
Mary’s decision was to "listen" to Jesus rather than "work" for Jesus. Discuss a Christian’s need to both listen and work. What happens when they get out of balance.
Read John 11:28-35
The emotions in this story are very strong. Describe the emotions of Mary and of Jesus.
What words of comfort did Jesus offer to Mary that also apply to us today?
Read Matthew 26:6-13
Mary has grown in her knowledge of Jesus. How is that indicated in this story?
Mary is performing what can be called a spiritual act of worship. Compare Mary’s action to what Christians are called to do in Romans 12:1-2
Application:
How do you listen to God?
What worldly things distract you or take you away from quiet moments with Jesus?
In all threes stories we have studied, Mary is found at the feet of Jesus. How can a modern day Christian be found "at the feet of Jesus"?
What can you do to minister to Jesus today? How can you bless the heart of God?
