MRS. RUBYE WARD GILL
June 7, 1920 - December 20, 2001

Mrs. Rubye Ward Gill, 81, of Warm Springs, passed away December 20 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs. Funeral services were held December 22 at Manchester Church of Nazarene with Rev. Eugene Wiseman officiating, assisted by Rev. Joe Lemmon. Burial followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Pallbearers were James Cuddington, Robbie Oliver, Mark Martin, Doodlum Ward, Mark Lott, Troy Smith, Toby Ward, and Gary Hicks. Honorary pallbearers were James Cuddington III, Brandon Hicks, Josh Lott, Blake Hicks, Robert Oliver, Jr., and Dustin Martin.

Mrs. Gill was born June 7, 1920 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Rufus Glen and Lula Owens Fowler, She was a homemaker and member of Manchester First Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include her husband, Oliver J. Gill of Warm Springs; two daughters, Anne and Richard Buchanan of Columbus, and Sharon Short of Warm Springs; two sons, Thomas Ward and David and Reba Ward, all of Warm Springs; two brothers, Glenn and Mildred Fowler of Manchester and Rufus and Nellie Fowler of Warm Springs; two sisters, Louise Walden of Moultrie and Norma Jean and Bob Kent of Georgetown; stepdaughter, Debbie and Pete Steele of Manchester and their children Stacey and Michael; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Gill, two grandchildren, Robin Ward and Wade Ward, and one step-great grandchild Tyler Gibson.

MRS. MARIE MCDONALD COCHRAN
August 25, 1918 - December 22, 2001

Mrs. Marie McDonald Cochran, 83, of Warm Springs, passed away December 22 at her residence. Funeral services were conducted December 24 at the Chapel of Smith-Steele-Meadows Funeral Home with the Reverend Cullen Clements officiating. Burial followed at County Line Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were George McDonald, Junior McDonald, Ed Barentine, Mike Mekkerson, Robert Crowder and Franklin Davenport.

Mrs. Cochran was born August 25, 1918 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Robert Allen and Ida Lee Williams McDonald. She was a homemaker and a member of the County Line Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Alice and Tom Jones, and Ida and Sammy Middlebrooks, all of Warm Springs; four grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Bennet Cochran and a daughter, Virginia Lee Cochran.

ERMA JEAN REEVES
December 24, 2001

Sister Erma Jean Reeves was born to the late Frank and Annie Jean Copeland on February 10th in Meriwether County. She joined New Hope Baptist Church at an early age where she served on the usher board. On December 24, 2001, the heavenly father called Sister Erma Jean Reeves home for rest.

She leaves to cherish her memory; her devoted husband, Larry Reeves of Manchester, GA; nine children: Patricia Traylor (Otis), Babbie Bryant, Kirk Bonner, Deidra Harvey (Daris), Devin Dunlap, and Corey Copeland, all from Manchester; Jacquelyn Dunlap, Decatur, GA; James A. Bryant, Riverdale, GA; and Gail Copeland, Woodland, GA; three sisters: Maggie L. Harvery (Richard), Pittsburg, PA; Annie R. Harvey, Atlanta, GA; Mollie Reeves (Oscar), Manchester, GA; one brother, Johnny L. Copeland of Manchester; five sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, one aunt, ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Erma Jean Reeves were held Saturday, December 29 at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. J. D. Walker officiating.

MRS. AGNES ANDERSON WARE
September 19, 1916 - January 4, 2002

Funeral services for Mrs. Agnes Anderson Ware, 85 of Wedowee, Alabama were held January 6 from Green’s Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Ed Grooms officiating. Burial followed in the adjoining church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Charles Fincher, Guy (Junior) Benefield, Wayne Heard, Jim Gross, Larry Strain and Billy Wood. Honorary pallbearers were James Green, R.P McManus, and Larry Conger.

Mrs. Ware was born in Meriwether County September 19, 1916, daughter of the late Virgil Martin Anderson and the late Mary June Williams Anderson. She was a 1933 graduate of Manchester High School, was employed with the Randolph County Health Department and was a member of Green’s Chapel United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clenis F. Ware, two sisters, LouEllen Welson and Edith Anderson, and two brothers, Leon Anderson and Edwin Anderson.

Survivors include a daughter, Alice Ware of Wedowee; a sister, Gloria Matteri of Sebastopol, California; two nieces and seven nephews.

MRS. MADELINE GREEN SHUMAN
July 13, 1913 - January 3, 2002

Mrs. Madeline Green Shuman, 88, of Manchester, passed away January 3 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home in Warm Springs. Graveside services were held January 7 at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Savannah with Rev. Jimmy Shupe officiating.

Mrs. Shuman was born July 13, 1913 in Chatham County, daughter of the late James and Ellen Glanton Green. She was a retired manager of the Georgian Tea Room in Savannah, was a member of the Savannah Primitive Baptist Church and was the widow of William Henry Schuman. She moved to Manchester from Savannah in 1994.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Schuman of Manchester and William Dale Schuman of Palos Verdes, California; one sister, Rita Hall of Americus; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Schuman may be made to a favorite charity.

MRS. ALICE CARR TARPLEY

Mrs. Alice Carr Tarpley, 94, of Manchester, passed away December 31, 2001 at her home. Funeral services were held at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home January 2nd with Elder Ed McIntyre, pastor of Flint River Primitive Baptist Church officiating, assisted by Rev. Chris Hughes. Burial followed January 4th at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery in Toomsboro.

Mrs. Tarpley was born February 21, 1907 in Wilkinson County, daughter of the late Alonzo E. and Mary Frances Carr. She was a member of Flint River Primitive Baptist Church in Thomaston, was retired from Callaway Mills in Manchester and was the widow of Willie Arnold Tarpley.

Survivors include four daughters, Eunice Tuttle of Manchester, Catherine Tarpley of Columbus, Joyce Scarratt of Marietta, and Billy Hambrick of Powder Springs; one son, Lennie "Joe" Tarpley of Columbus; one sister, Laura Spivey of Hardwick; one brother, Winifred "Red" Carr of Toomsboro; nine grandchildren, including her older grandson, Tony Tuttle of Manchester; 12 great grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gladys M. Tarpley.

Mrs. Mae Doris Woods, 89, passed away January 2nd at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home. Funeral Services were held January 4 at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home with Rev. C.R. Hicks officiating. Burial followed at Cove Baptist Church cemetery.

Mrs. Woods was born November 17, 1912 in Franklin, daughter of the late John William Storey and the late Almeida Bond Storey. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church, was retired from Callaway Mills and was the widow of Roy L. Woods.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Mr. Weldon was born June 12, 1964 in Lakewood, Ohio, the son of Doris Marilyn Suttles and the late Michael Weldon.

Eric C. "Ricky" Moore, 40, of Lanette, Alabama, formerly of Shiloh, passed away January 3rd. A memorial service was held in the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home January 6 with the Reverald Rick Lipp, pastor of Community Chapel officiating.

Mr. Moore was born February 26, 1961 in Warm Springs, son of the late William H. Moore and the late Nora Wyatt Moore. He was employed in the logging industry and was a Baptist by faith.

Survivors include one son, Eric Clinton Moore, Jr. Of Shreveport, Louisiana; one stepson, B.J. Bedgood of Columbus; one brother and sister-in-law, Curtis and Angie Moore of Manchester; one sister and brother-in-law, Christy and Mike Dowling of Port St. Joe, Florida; and a loving friend, Charlene Colley of Lanett.

MRS. LIMA C. WALLACE

Mrs. Lima C. Wallace, 88, passed away December 29, at the Medical Center of Columbus. Funeral services were held December 31 at the First United Methoside Church of Warner Robins with interment following at Magnolia Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Wallace was born in Greenville, Mississippi, daughter of the late John and Mary Carpenter. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Warner Robins, where she was a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class. She was a retired educator, having taught in the Houston County School System primarily at Westside Elementary, was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Houston County and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and Houston Association of Educators.

Survivors include a son, Glenn T. Wallace of Manchester; grandchildren, Erin Silvaroli of Orlando, Florida, Lynley Barry of Titusville, Florida and Edwin Wallace of Manchester; one great-grandchild, Taylor Force of Titusville; one nephew, John Kelley of Eastman. She was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in law, Peggy and Robert Gilchrist, and her husband, John Greer Wallace.

MRS. MINNIE BELL MORGAN

Mrs. Minnie Bell Morgan, 93, of Manchester, died December 28 at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Nursing Home. Services were held December 31 at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. Donnie Morgan and Rev. John Simmons officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Morgan was born June 3, 1908 in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Henry Cleveland Thompson and the late Daisy Brown Thompson. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and was retired from the Callaway Mills Company where she worked in the cloth room. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Morgan.

Survivors include three daughters, Janice Englett of Douglasville, Joyce Tucker and Marie Saucer of Manchester; ; three sons, Floyd Morgan of Thomaston, Gene Morgan of Danielsville and Royce Morgan of Forsyth; 16 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

REV. THOMAS W. HARRISON

Rev. Thomas W. "Tommy" Harrison, 59, of Waverly Hall, died January 12, in Bessemer, Alabama. Funeral services were held January 14 at Northside Baptist Church in Manchester with Dr. Bill Lee officiating, assisted by Rev. Jerry Speer. Burial followed at the Waverly Hall City Cemetery with Ben Mann, Bob Slaughter, Wilson Butts, Johnny McCall, Glenn Johnston, and Bobby Wages serving as pallbearers.

Rev. Harrison was born February 24, 1942 in Lamar County, Alabama, son of Arthur W. Harrison and Nettie Vinson Harrison. He graduated from Silligent High School in Sulligent, Alabama in 1960 and was licensed to preach on June 25, 1967 at Mulberry Springs Baptist Church in Sulligent. In 1972 he received his diploma in Theology from Florida Baptist Theological College in Graceville, Florida. He had served as pastor of the following churches: New Ebenezer Baptist Church, Elba, Alabama (June 1970 - February 1973); Shorterville Baptist Church, Shorterville, Alabama (February 1973 - September 1975); Northside Baptist Church, Manchester, (September 1975 - September 1979); Corinth Baptist Church, Gainesville (September 1979 - September 1980); Full Time Evangelism (September 1980 - April 1982); Northside Baptist Church, Manchester (April 1982 - January 1982); Second Baptist Church, Columbus (January 1984 - August 1986); Kinsey Baptist Church, Kinsey, Alabama (August 1986 - May 1988); Liberty Baptist Church, Columbus (June 1990 - January 1994); Waverly Hall Baptist Church, Wavely Hall (September 1994 - March 1998); The Rock Baptist Church, Cataula (Minister of Evangelism)(1998).

He also had served the following churches as interim pastor: Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Atalla, Alabama (1969); Pleasant Hills Baptist Church, Solcumb, Alabama (1969); Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, Headland, Alabama (August 1988 - June 1990).

He was currently (since 1998) the pastor of Old Shiloh Baptist Church in Shiloh.

Survivors include his mother, Nettie V. Harrison of Sulligent, Alabama,; his wife, Linda Swairi Harrison of Waverly Hall; a daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and Ross Dietrich of Ellerslie; a son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Kiesha Harrison of Midland; a brother, Steve Harrison of Vernon, Alabama; and a sister, Judy Armstrong of Sulligent; three grandsons, Hagan, Trey and Elijah Harrison.

Mrs. Clestell Addie Wrightstone, 68, of Manchester, passed away January 14 at her home. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 17 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home in Manchester. Rev. Rufus Thornton of Louise will officiate, assisted by Rev. Jimmie Chapman of Trinity Baptist Church.

Mrs. Wrightstone was born March 30, 1933 in Carrolton, daughter of the late Andrew and Myrtle Owens Pike.

Survivors include her husband, Floyd Wrightstone of Opelika, Alabama; three sons, Bobby Folds of Manchester, Ricky Folds of LaGrange, and Jerrell Folds, also of Manchester; two daughters, Nelda Gosnell of Opelika, and Ann Terrell of West Point; one sister, Joyce Veal of Hogansville; two brothers, Felton Pike of Tennessee and James Pike of LaGrange; 10 grandchildren; six great grandchildren.

WALTER CLAYTON POWELL
July 13, 1918 - January 11, 2002

Walter Clayton Powell, 83, died January 11 in Long Beach, California from the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease. His remains were cremated and scattered over the Pacific Ocean.

Mr. Powell was born July 13, 1918 in Valdosta, son of the Luther W. and Allie Cannon Powell. He attended public school in Manchester and later joined the US Navy serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was an avid sports fan and was a member of the All Navy Baseball Team during his service in the Navy. After his discharge from the Navy at the end of the war, he owned and operated a dry cleaning shop in Long Beach for over twenty years.

His first marriage, which ended in divorce, produced a son, Phillip Andrew Powell. He later married Mary Elizabeth Jones whom he had known from his early years in Manchester. They were divorced March 4, 1992.

Walter was preceded in death by his sisters, Marguerite Jackson and Ludelle Dufour. He is survived by his nieces, Donna Sue Sieverson of Santa Margarita, California and Lisa Lucio of Mira Loma, California and by two brothers-in-law, William Jackson of Valley Center, California and Ray Dufour of Brigham City, Utah.

DELA HADDEN WOODALL
December 1, 1935 - January 17, 2002

DeLa Hadden Woodall, 66, of Woodland, passed away on January 17, 2002 at Upson Regional Medical Center in Thomaston. Graveside services were conducted on Sunday, January 20, 2002, at 3:00 PM at Woodland Cemetery. Rev. Gene Turkett, Pastor of Dayspring Community Chapel in Griffin, officiating.

Mr. Woodall was born December 1, 1935 in Talbot County and was the son of the late Gladys Hadden Woodall and James Fletcher Woodall. Mr. Woodall retired from Goody Products after 34 years. He was the Recipient of the Abe Sidelman Award, a Korean War Army Veteran, and a licensed Master Gun Smith. He was a member of Woodland Baptist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Michelle Rigdon of Buena Vista; Cheryl Duval of Talbotton; Carla McDowell of Woodland; one son, James "Bud" Woodall of Vinita, Oklahoma; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

JoAnn Dean Jerrard, 62, of Manchester, passed away on January 17, 2002 at Georgia Baptist Memorial Nursing Home in Warm Springs. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Jerrard was born on July 16, 1939 in Troup County and had lived in Manchester most of her life.

Survivors include one son, Jerry Jerrard of Waycross; four sisters, Leamon McCoy of Warm Springs, Sesma Elmore of LaGrange, Virginia Doggett of Warm Springs, and Maudie McBroom of Warm Springs; one brother, John Railey, Jr., of Thomaston.

HUGH DOWLING
December 29, 2001

Hugh Dowling of Snellville, formerly of Manchester, died December 29, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Helen Kellum Dowling, daughter and sons-in-law, Ann and Mitch Hardigree, Greenville, SC; Susan and Dale Stephens, Snellville; grandchildren, Kevin Hardigree, Mandy Hardigree, Geoffrey Brooks, Elizabeth Brooks, Allison Stephens, Erin Carlton and Meghan Stephens; and one great-grandchild, Delaney Carlton.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 31, at 11 at First United Methodist Church, Stone Mountain, GA. Dr. Bill McKoy officiated. Burial followed in the Manchester City Cemetery.

Mr. Dowling served in the US Arm and returned to work in the railroad office in Manchester, working several positions, until the office was closed. In December 1957, he was transferred to the CSX office in Atlanta as Chief Industrial Clerk, retiring June 1, 1982. He was affiliated with Manchester Feed & Seed for many years.
