Our Equipment
The Lafayette
City-Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness has, over the years,
made a substantial investment in amateur radio equipment that can
be utilized in time of emergency to help its residents. As
amateur radio operator volunteers (and residents) we operate and
help maintain this equipment. We also appreciate the effort that
has been made toward our safety--your safety--and the excellent
state of emergency preparedness that exists for all of us within
the parish. We thought that you would like to see some of this
equipment.

Figure 1: VHF
Packet Equipment. This equipment can be utilized to send digital
messages to stations around the world as well as communicate with
local evacuation shelters and provide electronic mail
capabilities during emergency operations.

Figure 2. From
left to right: HF/VHF/CAP Position, HF Position, and HF
Packet/VHF/Skywarn Operating Position. During severe weather
events the position on the right is utilized to watch weather
radar and communicate with storm spotters in the field. Severe
weather events are reported directly to the National Weather
Service in Lake Charles. These reports, in turn, are utilized to
issue some of the weather watches and warnings that you receive
on television, radio and NOAA Weather Radio.
