A note of caution: This document, though historically
interesting, is unclear in one area--the use of plastic sheeting to protect
tropical plants is mentioned. If it is necessary to cover plants, to keep
out the cold, the plastic is better spread over the entire house! Plastic
sheeting should not be wrapped around or used in a way that encloses the
plant. A shroud of plastic will become like an oven when the Sun rises.
If plants are covered individually, the air should be able to move through,
and should not be prone to heating up in the morning sunlight! An old bed
sheet is safest, and when kept damp, insulates delicate foliage from the
cold.
