Minty and His Cavalry

History of the Saber Brigade and its Commander, 2006, written by descendant, Rand Bitter. This book is the incredible culmination of years of research and study by a member of the descendants association. By far to date the best book written on the history of Col. Robert H. G. Minty, the commander of Minty's Brigade and the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry, 4th Michigan Cavalry and the 4th U.S. Cavalry. Please contact this site for info on acquiring this wonderful book.

 

7th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regimental History

 

Blue Acorn Press has republished, "Colonel William B. Sipes' Regimental History of the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry." Originally published in 1905 by the Pottsville Miner's Journal, copies of this hard to find book command upwards of $300.00 on the open market. Author/Publisher Richard Baumgartner published the book in a hardback edition, complete with dust jacket and additional images. Baumgartner has published numerous Western Theatre books, to include one on the struggle for Chattanooga, Kennesaw Mt., and Wilders Brigade at the battle of Chickamauga. "Sabre Strokes of the Pennsylvania Dragoons"

 

Thomas Dornblaser's "Sabre Strokes of the Independent Dragoons" has been reprinted by Gary and Ruth-Alice Spangler of New Berlin, Pa. The Spanglers, who are descendants of Thomas Dornblaser, Co. "E", 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry, contracted with Gateway Press, Baltimore, MD. for the reprint. Copies of this beautiful hardcover reprint can be obtained by sending a check for $37.50 to Gary Spangler at PO Box 313, New Berlin, PA. 17855. This is a reprint of a rare and entertaining book and heartily recommend the purchase of this hardcover reprint. Originals demand upwards of $300.

 

7th Pennsylvania Cavalry Publications

 

"History of the Seventh Penna. Cavalry", also known as Sipes Regimental, this book was published by the Pottsville Miners Journal in 1906. This rare book gives a full regimental history and also includes a full roster and many images. As stated above this book will be in reprint in the year 2000 so that many others can learn more of this most famous regiment.

"Minty and the Cavalry", by Joseph Vale. This book was published in 1886 and has never been reprinted. It is also rare but some copies can be found.  The price ranges from $200 to $350 a copy. This book is fantastic account of "Minty's Brigade". A brigade which consisted of the 4th Michigan Cavalry, 4th U.S. Cavalry and of course the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Included also is a section on the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry. This wonderful book has now been reprinted and is available at: Higginson Book Company 148 Washington Street Salem, Mass. 01970.


"Pennsylvania at Chickamauga and Chattanooga". This book was printed in 1897 by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, for the dedication of the monuments at Chickamauga and Chattanooga. It has a very good description of the 7th's actions in that area with a photo of the Veterans at the monument dedication. Price on this book is $50 to $100.

"Mansfield Men in the Seventh Pennsylvania Cavalry". A small paperback book printed in 1986 by Chester Baily. An interesting little book about the men from Tioga County Pennsylvania in the 7th. It also includes the letters of Charles M. Rumsey of company "C". This book is about $5 and is available through the Tioga County Historical Society.

"The Independent Dragoons", by Thomas Dornblaser. This book was first printed in 1884 and is quite an interesting book on the common soldiers life in the 7th. One of my favorites. As stated above it is now available in reprint. A must have for any Civil War enthusiast.

Also by Thomas Dornblaser is," My Life Story for Young and Old". Printed in 1930 this book covers the life of Thomas Dornblaser. A very interesting book with many references to the 7th. Book is rare but copies can be found and purchased for about $125.

"Sherman's Horsemen", by David Evans. This book has to be the best book ever written on the cavalry operations in the Atlanta campaign. A highly recommended book for anyone who is a fan of the 7th and with an interest in the cavalry during the battles for Atlanta.

"Wilsons Cavalry Corps" by Jerry Keenan. A book on Union Campaigns in the Western Theatre, October 1864 till Spring 1865. Many references to the 7th Penna. Cavalry.

"Yankee Blitzkrieg, Wilsons Raid through Alabama and Georgia", by James Pickett Jones. Many references to the 7th during these operations.

Bates " History of Pennsylvania Volunteers" by Samuel Bates. Has history and roster for all regiments from Pennsylvania. The 7th is included. Complete 5 volume set is $500 to $800 and is also available from Broadfoot publishing with an index sold extra. Index works with both original and reprint.

"History and Roster of the Seventh Pennsylvania Cavalry" Very rare. Printed in 1904.

"Advance the Colors" by Richard Sauers. Two volume book with brief unit history and battle flag of the regiment. Printed in 1987 and available. $90.00 for both volumes. The 7th appears in volume 1.

"The First Defenders" by Captain Heber Thompson. Very rare. Printed in 1910.

"To See the Elephant" Printed in 2000 by Descendants Association member, Robert Schell Ulrich. A wonderful book taken from letters written home by his ancestor's, Benneville, George, Reuben Schell. 

"Of Sabres and Carbines" Printed in 2001 by The Papers of the Blue and Gray. Written by association member, Dr. Laurence D. Schiller. A must have for the cavalry enthusiast. Contact Larry Fryer for ordering info.
